Why Walk and Talk Therapy?

Seashells on the beach

Walk and Talk Therapy may be a unique experience for many clients. Instead of traditional sit-down discussions, we will be unpacking your problems while taking a nice walk around the beautiful Wrightsville Beach area.

So why deviate from traditional therapy?

For some clients, traditional therapy may be intimidating. Walking side-by-side eliminates the direct eye contact and interaction you usually make with your therapist. It is similar to the phenomenon of feeling more open and talkative during a long car-ride! Sometimes we need to focus only on our thoughts and not on our facial expressions and presentations. Walking next to your therapist can provide this feeling of anonymity.

Additionally, the light exercise of walking increases our cognitive functioning and ability to retain information. You may find it easier to introspect and analyze your situation when moving versus when sitting in one place. Further, light exercise improves our memory, attention, and learning—these cognitive benefits help you fully process your therapeutic insights and comprehend new techniques and skills taught to you in our therapy together.

Finally, our mental and physical well-being are intimately connected. It is my hope that our walks together will promote a sense of happiness through the benefits of movement. We will also discuss how other aspects of your life (such as diet, exercise, and socialization) impact your mood and work together to find solutions to give you the best chance at having a healthy mind and body!
